Learn more about this striking species and where to spot it: State Bird of Uttarakhand.
Uttarakhand, often called the "Land of Gods," is home to some of the most stunning natural landscapes in India, and its state bird reflects that same natural splendor. The Himalayan Monal (Lophophorus impejanus) holds the distinction of being the official state bird of Uttarakhand, celebrated for its extraordinarily vibrant, multicolored plumage that shimmers with shades of green, blue, purple, and copper under sunlight.
Found across the high-altitude forests and alpine meadows of the Himalayas, typically between 2,400 and 4,500 meters, the Himalayan Monal thrives in the cool, rugged terrain that defines much of Uttarakhand's mountain regions. Male Monals are especially striking, with their iridescent feathers and a distinctive crest, while females display more subdued brown tones suited for camouflage during nesting.
