Football Tuna, Comercial Tuna and Stripers

Sep 19, 2009

The Small Tuna last week were seen in close in area like Speckled Apron however the heavy bite moved back out towards the Curl and on Jeffries Ledge. Live bait is still a great option as long as you don't run your lines down deep where the dogfish have been hanging out. There was plenty of Whiting out at Half-Way Hump and we picked up some finicky Mackeral over by the Isle of Shoals. The Macks required a lot of chumming but they are around. There were a ton of spike Mackeral at Speckled but the baits were only about 4" in length and no good for Giant Tuna. The Comercial Fleet have been fishing between the Mud Hole and Outside Flag. We hooked a giant at Old Scantum but broke us off at the leader. The fish have been leader shy so we sized down, got the hookup but lost the fish. Thats the risk of downsizing your leader the hookup rate is better but you chance loosing the fish.

Stripers have been slow in the river and are hanging out on the beach fronts. I recomend trolling down the shoreline or pulling out the surf rods right now. Early morning you can watch for the birds and still get into some bluefish. Pear Niner Rigs and Jointed Braid lures have been my go-to's for finding fish out front.
