sandeels and herring

May 21, 2010

there are more sandeels and herring around than Ive seen in a long time. This morning we went out in search of mackeral from a tip that there were some at breaking rock. We only found one mackeral but on the way out you could see 5 birds at once with sandeels hanging from their beaks and others diving after their own. The sandeels stretched from the icebreaker to the mouth. Any one throwing artificials will have a lot of luck with some sandeel imitations in the river(match the hatch). If you go out to speckled apron and look for the many large bait balls of herring those will definately do the trick to catch some big stripers, however remember to take better care of your herring, they don't survive in the livewell as easily as mackeral. Keep the water cold.

Some party boat captains are predicting the cod spawn at long ledge will be starting soon and hopefully this weekend however for the time being hanging out around old and new Scantum. You might have to head out a little farther but there is still some good action happening. The Williamson Rotating Flutter Jigs have been having a lot of success this past week as well as the old faithful Norwegian Jigs. Good Luck.
