Crossroads Bait and Tackle Fish Report > Mid July Big Bite
Mid July Big Bite

Jul 15, 2017

Tuna have been busting all over the place including many inshore showings at Breaking Rock right off the beach. Pogies are the key bait driving the Bluefins close to shore. Pogies are out in numbers that I havn't seen in a long time. Snagging a few for tuna or striper bait is a great option right now. We weighed in some big Stripers this week caught on Live Pogies. Bunker or Pogie colored Lures are also working great right now. Mackerel have been showing up at Breaking Rock more consistently lately than they were earlier in the season however we are still having to go to Dishcharge shafts or Hampton Shoal Ledge on some days. Stripers are in full force and we are having great success dragging eels at night as well as throwing 12 inch double rigged slug-gos.

If your tuna fishing in close off the beach, the 180 line or outside flag has been producing lots of giant sellable fish. the dog fish moved into the outside flag for a day or 2 but seemed to have moved on for now. Herring has been a little tough to get out there for hook baits so you might want to stop in the deep water for some whiting or in close for macks or pogies before you head out.

A lot of guys are asking about Bluefish and we still havnt seen them. Water temps along the beach and in the ocean are still a little low but this might be another season without a strong bluefish run. Hopefully it changes but so far not looking good.
