Those crazy knuckleheads have finally triumphed. The Rock has been cast in a superhero movie. Black Adam is a jaw-dropping big-screen spectacular that mixes the greatest action star with the most obnoxious effects-driven genre.
For better or worse, this is the ultimate blockbuster.
If you appreciate films of this kind, Black Adam, which is currently a box office smash, is a lot of fun. With Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson playing a rare villain(ish) role and wreaking devastation with a knowing smile to the camera, the film presents a humorously murderous antihero who injects irreverence into the superhero notion basketball stars sport.
Director Jaume Collet-Serra revels in dishing out death and destruction, from the main character's skull-crushing debut to a ludicrously violent spoof of the X-super-speed Men's sequences (but in a humorous way). Black Adam is an absolutely guiltless guilty joy from start to finish (even the inevitable post-credits scene and fan-pleasing cameo).
This makes the film's worst shortcoming, Black Adam, all the more tragic. Dwayne Johnson, or the Rock, one of our most magnetic performers, depicts the role as a humorless, heartless block. This may serve as inspiration: Earlier in his career, the actor was often compared to Arnold Schwarzenegger, and the film has a Terminator 2: Judgment Day vibe; a skateboarding kid tries to teach Adam how to catch and behave like a hero. Despite his limited range, Johnson was never an uneasy actor like Schwarzenegger. Despite the fact that his films often pale in comparison to Schwarzenegger's, he has always been a considerably more likeable and expressive character, and seeing him perform stone-faced makes us feel robbed of something irreplaceable. Only at the conclusion of the film does our protagonist's face show a trace of awareness, as his gloomy inaction gives way to something more like to deadpan. It is acknowledged, but it is too late.
Perhaps more importantly, Johnson's inaction is accentuated by his disagreeable stoniness. Despite the fact that we know he is competent, the sometimes emotive dialogue about the state of his property begs for emotion. ("Just say'shazam,' and we're all whisked away. "I don't have a place to reside." "We're both aware you're not supposed to be here." (You're not supposed to be here.) Consider how much better and more pointed Black Adam might have been if he had said these things with even a hint of bitterness, depression, or boiling rage. There is, it turns out, a narrative justification for the character's refusal to feel emotion. However, this is a pathetic justification that seems like a sham. Worse, it undermines the film: Johnson is so passive throughout so much of the film that I'd think he wasn't there during production and that his sections were just animated using an image of his face.
