A Tar and gravel roofs, also known as a built-up roofing (BUR) system, is commonly used in flat or low-slope roofs. It consists of multiple layers of bitumen (tar or asphalt) combined with a layer of gravel or stones for added protection. This type of roof provides durability, weather resistance, and excellent insulation. It helps prevent water penetration by creating a watertight seal. However, regular maintenance is required to check for cracks, blisters, or wear in the tar layer. The gravel layer also needs occasional cleaning to ensure proper drainage. Despite its longevity, a tar and gravel roof may require professional repair or replacement after many years.
