Rivers of Uttarakhand
Rivers are the very lifeblood of Uttarakhand — the source of its spiritual identity, the sustainer of its ecosystems, and the provider of water for hundreds of millions across northern India. The Panch Prayag
The Panch Prayag are the five sacred river confluences along the Alaknanda in the Garhwal Himalayas.
From lowest to highest: Devprayag (where the Ganga is born from the union of the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda), Rudraprayag (Mandakini joins), Karnaprayag (Pindar joins), Nandaprayag (Nandakini joins), and Vishnuprayag (Dhauliganga joins). Devprayag is the most sacred — the Ganga's birthplace — where the emerald-green Alaknanda merges spectacularly with the grey-blue Bhagirathi. Each prayag has resident priests, ancient temples, and bathing ghats where pilgrims perform rituals.
