Cenforce works primarily by affecting the blood flow in the body, especially in the penis. Its active ingredient, sildenafil citrate, is a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor. Normally, PDE5 breaks down a chemical called cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), which helps relax smooth muscles and dilate blood vessels. By inhibiting PDE5, Cenforce increases cGMP levels, allowing the blood vessels in the penis to remain dilated for longer periods. This enhances blood flow during sexual arousal, leading to an erection. However, Cenforce only works when there is sexual stimulation; it does not cause automatic arousal or erections. Though its primary action is localized to the penile tissue, Cenforce also affects vascular smooth muscle in other areas, which can occasionally cause side effects like headache or flushing.
