Treatment of hydronephrosis aims to restore normal urine flow and reduce the pressure on the kidneys caused by urine buildup. This condition occurs when urine cannot drain properly from the kidney to the bladder due to an obstruction in the urinary tract. If not treated on time, the swelling in the kidney may lead to damage to kidney tissues.
The treatment mainly depends on the cause and severity of the blockage. In mild cases, doctors may simply monitor the condition and treat infections with antibiotics. Pain management and regular medical check-ups may also be recommended. When hydronephrosis is caused by kidney stones or other obstructions, procedures may be required to remove the blockage. Doctors may insert a ureteral stent or nephrostomy tube to help drain urine and relieve kidney pressure. In some situations, surgery may be necessary to correct structural problems. Early treatment helps protect kidney function and prevents serious complications.
