Howdy Folks!

I am working on a small app for a fishing platform, a place to share catches, tips, and favorite local spots. It is meant to be a cozy community, nothing huge. My main challenge is picking the right backend: I want something free or cheap, easy to manage, and that won't tie me into complicated server setups.

In this regard, I have been checking out Firebase and Back4App. Firebase looks really powerful, but I worry it might be overkill for a small community and a bit steep to learn. However, I am not happy with its closed-source nature, and some users also claim it is hard to switch from Firebase to other BaaS platforms. Contrarily, Back4App, an open-source BaaS, seems simpler, with fast deployment and a generous free tier, though I am wondering how well it would hold up if the community grows a bit. I also like its built-in authentication, quick push notifications, and real-time DB support.

Has anyone here built a small hobby app or a niche community app? I'm trying to pick a backend that keeps things lightweight but still gets the job done. I want to focus on fun features like leaderboards, photo sharing, and notifications without getting buried in server code.

I'd really love to hear what has worked for you and any recommendations you have!
