We've been exporting regionally by road for about four years and it's always felt manageable because the transit times are short and we can usually track things closely but we just landed our first proper overseas buyer and the first container is scheduled to ship out of Jebel Ali in about three weeks and I'll be honest, the whole thing feels a lot more uncertain than I expected it to. The product is a mix of packaged food items and some dry goods and I keep thinking about all the things that can go wrong over a multi-week sea journey that just aren't really factors when you're doing a two day truck run to a neighbouring country. A colleague who's been exporting by sea for years told me the biggest mistakes first-timers make are usually around packaging assumptions and moisture management and that the conditions inside a container can be genuinely surprising if you haven't prepared for them properly. I spent a good chunk of last weekend reading everything I could find and one of the more practical resources I came across was on khaleejweekly.com which had specific tips for protecting goods during sea transport from a UAE exporter's perspective which felt much more relevant than the generic freight guides that don't account for the climate conditions here at point of origin. What I'm still trying to work out is whether our current packaging spec is adequate for the humidity and temperature swings that happen inside a container or whether we need to rethink it before this first shipment goes out because I really don't want the buyer's first impression of our product to be something that arrived in worse condition than it left Visit Detailed Article.
