The 2013 Uttarakhand Floods

The June 2013 Uttarakhand floods — often called the 'Himalayan Tsunami' — were one of the worst natural disasters in India's post-independence history. Triggered by intense pre-monsoon rainfall and the outburst of Chorabari Lake near Kedarnath, the disaster unleashed walls of water and debris down multiple valleys on June 16-17. The pilgrim town of Kedarnath was almost entirely obliterated. The official death toll exceeded 5,700. Approximately 100,000 people were evacuated in one of the largest peacetime rescue operations in Indian history. The disaster forced a painful national conversation about unchecked development in fragile Himalayan terrain.
• The June 2013 Uttarakhand floods are considered one of India's worst natural disasters inpost-independence history.
• It was triggered by unusually heavy pre-monsoon rains combined with catastrophic glacial lake outburstfloods.
• The bursting of Chorabari Lake near Kedarnath released a devastating wall of water on June 16-17.
• The Kedarnath valley was most severely affected — almost the entire pilgrim town was completelydestroyed.
• The official death toll exceeded 5,700, with many more missing and bodies never recovered.
• An estimated 100,000 people stranded in remote areas were evacuated by the Army, Air Force, ITBP,and NDRF.
• Estimated economic losses reached approximately Rs. 3,500 crore.
• The disaster exposed the vulnerability of the Himalayas to rapid, unchecked development.
• It prompted a serious national re-evaluation of hydropower, road construction, and tourism policies.
• Reconstruction of Kedarnath took years and was treated as a matter of national priority. onlinechardham
