A CSS background image allows developers to display images behind the content of HTML elements without inserting them directly into the document as content images. The background-image property specifies the image file, while additional properties control its appearance. For example, background-size: cover fills the element, background-position: center centers the image, and background-repeat: no-repeat prevents repetition. Developers can apply backgrounds to the entire page, individual sections, banners, or cards. CSS backgrounds are especially useful for decorative visuals. However, meaningful images that communicate essential information should generally use an HTML img element with appropriate alternative text.
