Crossroads Bait and Tackle Fish Report > Crushing it into July
Crushing it into July

Jul 8, 2016

First I want to start by talking about something that constantly comes up and It confuses me that it took so long to figure out. Cod fishing despite not being able to keep them has been awesome, striper fishing has been excellent, the football tuna have shown back up. The Div. of Marine Fisheries is going to take credit for shutting down the ground fishing as to why the Cod came back, and lowering the limit on the stripers to one per person. They will also say something along the lines that the football tuna just decided to migrate this way this year. It's all bullshit, in my opinion. I apologize I think that's the first time Ive sworn in a fishing report but there is one obvious answer. WE SHUT THE HERRING DRAGGERS DOWN FOR THE WINTER. and a lot of people don't realize that happened. Canada is renowned for it's unbelievable tuna and ground fishing. WHY? simple they protect the most important thing in the ocean to sustain a healthy fishery, the herring. the beginning of the food chain that feeds the medium to large fish. If we protect the feed all the other fishing will follow, come on Div. of Marine Fisheries it's not that complicated, except the herring boats make millions and feed the government tax dollars and shut down any opposition. And that's what grinds my gears.
I went out night fishing on the incoming tide the other night and caught a bunch of fish on eels and artificials. We were only able to find small keepers in the low thirty inch range but had a blast anyway. Black double rigged slug-go and black and purple bombers were what we were throwing. guys are still reporting a lot of fish up river, unusual for this time of year but water temps are still pretty good in the Merrimack river, instead of the normal bath water we encounter this time of year. The mouth of the Merrimack is hitting very good at the bottom of the outgoing tide. Pogies are in heavy still and have made it up past the discharge shafts in front of Hampton as well as along the beaches of Salisbury and plum island. mackerel slowed down last week but came back to breaking rock the last couple days.

the biggest complaint Ive had about groundfishing and run into myself, is the cod are hitting so quickly its tough to get the haddock on some days. not everyone is experiencing this and Tillies is loaded with haddock right now.

Giant Bluefin Tuna and footballs are here and the reports are getting more consistent. There were some fish taken at the Outside Flag and footballs on top there. Twin lights was showing some action but recently the dogfish moved in. The other spot reporting good action is the Curl. But there wasn't much for herring or whiting out there so you might want to grab some swimmers before heading out there.
